Are You An Autism Friendly Business?

This workshop is aimed at all customer-facing businesses to help understand what Autism is and gain an insight on becoming an Autism Friendly Business.  Speakers include the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT) who are rolling out a new Autism Friendly Initiative to encourage and support local businesses to become autism friendly; Ulster Supported Employment and Learning (USEL) who will give practical tips on becoming autism friendly; and the NOW Group who champion sustainable employment opportunities for those with autism, learning disabilities/difficulties and/or health related conditions.

Northern Regional College Ideas Generation Workshops

Ideas Generation Workshops are open to all Level 2 and 3 students.

Winning teams will receive in-house mentoring and support to develop their idea into applications for the Catalyst Invent Competition with a first prize of £10,000.  Individual students with innovation potential will receive in-house mentoring to apply for the Catalyst Generation Innovation programme in June 2020.

Winning teams and individuals may also receive in-house college support such as:

  • Business mentor to develop the business plan
  • Technical support to develop the product (design and/or prototyping)
  • Pre-incubation workspace

Sentinus Enterprise & Digital Innovation

Monday 18 November 10am – 2pm

This workshop introduces year 10-12 pupils to the process of developing digital products to meet a business or society need led by the leading STEM educational provider Sentinus.  Students will have an opportunity to learn from a professional developer about the design thinking process, as used in industry, to help with concept creation.  This will be followed by some practical digital skills development for app building.  The programme will conclude with an introduction to the Longitude Explorer Challenge, asking young people to develop artificial intelligence solutions to a range of real world issues.

Ballymena Business Centre is a Northern Ireland Charity committed to promoting enterprise and entrepreneurship.  We support businesses of all types, big or small from pre-start, growth to export.  In addition to delivering the Go For It programme on behalf of Mid and East Antrim Council, Ballymena Business Centre together with The Gallaher Trust have recently introduced a £500 Seed Fund for start-ups in the former Ballymena Borough Council area and provide a range of free workshops to support local entrepreneurs.  Also new is the recent launch of affordable co-working office and retail space available in the town centre, perfect for new businesses.

Developing Tourism Together

Co-opetition is the latest buzzword but what does it really mean for business?

Can businesses actually work together to grow our tourism offering?

Come along and hear about the role and achievements of our local industry led tourism clusters.  Learn from industry professionals, who have taken their businesses or events from strength to strength by recognising the importance of working in partnership with the community, businesses and statutory bodies.

Effective Governance In Running A Social Enterprise

This workshop will cover the fundamentals and importance of having an effective governance structure in place when running a social enterprise.  It will cover the roles and responsibilities of board members, ways to unlock their potential and how to build on commitment and ownership.  This workshop is part of the Inspiring Communities Programme.

Pop Up Shops

The Pop Up Shop initiative will allow 10 entrepreneurs from across the borough to test-trade for the first time within a retail premises. Come along and offer support to our local entrepreneurs who will be showcasing their businesses in Carrickfergus and Larne town centres from 18 November to 14 December.

Exploring Logistics!

Tuesday 19 November  2 sessions: 9am – 12pm and 12pm – 3pm

Efficient transport and logistics services are required to move goods, people and animals across the globe and they play an essential role in facilitating all types of trade and commerce.  This is a complex and fast-moving industry which offers a wide variety of careers in transport management, freight forwarding, IT, engineering and customer service to name but a few.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in partnership with P&O Ferries and the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport will welcome local Year 10 pupils on a behind the scenes tour of Larne Port.  The young people will have a chance to find out about some of the career opportunities available by taking part in themed activities and hearing from people working in various roles at the port.

The Basics of Bookkeeping

This workshop is designed for sole traders, under the VAT limit, who would like to enhance their understanding of basic bookkeeping for their business.  It will focus on how to create your own simple bookkeeping system whilst covering what are allowable business expenses; the records you must keep; and what to expect when it comes to submitting your tax return.

Hosted by Ledcom and delivered by a qualified bookkeeper, this workshop will be highly interactive, including one-to-one sessions to discuss any queries you may have.

Catalyst in partnership with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council will be working with young people, companies and further education authorities to help design the perfect apprenticeship for our future generation of knowledge workers.

The world of work is changing and empowering our young people through apprenticeships and placements can set them on the right track with the right skillsets for the jobs of the future.  We are offering the opportunity for students to attend an informative and energetic day of design thinking.

‘Design the Perfect Apprenticeship’ is an immersive design-thinking workshop for post primary students facilitated by Patricia Flannagan.  Students, teachers and prospective employers will break into teams to work towards ideating ‘The Perfect Apprenticeship’ and presenting their solutions at the end of the day.  Students will work in teams using design-thinking principals to ideate on their solutions and develop prototypes.  The session will spark creativity and curiosity as well as develop problem solving skills and teamwork.  The day will also include a presentation around our Generation Innovation Work Experience Programme.

Students should attend from any discipline, as the workshop is skills based and will develop 21st Century skills.

Food Futures

This seminar for new and existing food businesses will provide an insight into future food trends and innovation in food production. Brian McDermott, who is an award-winning celebrity chef and author from Co Donegal, as well as chef-proprietor of the newly-restored Foyle Hotel in Moville, will tell of his journey to provide tasty, healthy food based around traditional recipes.  Fresh from his book Donegal Table winning Best Cookery Book in the World at the Gourmand Book Awards, Brian will give an insight into changing food trends and new innovations

There will be an overview of the Taste the Island initiative and Nigel Logan, owner of multi award-winning Hillstown Farm Shop, which has just been named Agri Food Business of the Year, will provide an insight into how his farm evolved from traditional farming to brewing beer.

Is Childminding the career for me?

Growing a successful small business is hard work! One of the toughest challenges that business owners face is how to move from being the ‘doer’ to building and managing a team and leading the business. Few owners have formal training in leadership or management so this taster workshop introduces you to some practical leadership and management tools which can help you design, build and shape your organisation to ensure healthy future growth.

Key speaker Arlene McDowell has over 17 years’ consultancy experience. To date she has worked with more than 800 businesses on a one-to-one basis. She is an accredited business adviser and trainer, and a qualified executive/business coach. Her work over the last five years has focused on leadership and management development. Also speaking is Helen Smyth from the Labour Relations Agency who will give guidance on creating a work environment conducive to employee mental health and wellbeing.

Digital Youth Masterclass

YENI will deliver a Digital Masterclass event aimed at Year 10 – 12 pupils, featuring a series of challenges to ignite interest in the digital sector and provide students with an engaging experience.

Students will work in teams to create a business plan for a digital start-up. This will cover concepts including product development, target customers, design, finance and branding. Interactive equipment will be used to help generate concepts and to encourage the students to think digital.

Business Volunteers will help facilitate the sessions, bridging the gap between business and education.

Returning To Work With Confidence

This event is for women who have taken a career break and who now want to get back into the workforce. You may have taken time out to look after children or relatives, for relocation, redundancy or for health reasons.  This session will give you an insight into the value you bring to an employer, give you tips to enter the workplace with confidence and consider the changes in the working environment.

Camilla Long – Co-founder and Director of Bespoke Communications.  Family commitments have had a huge influence on Camilla’s career. Sinéad Sharkey-Steenson is the founder and Managing Director of Generation Women. She has 20-years experience working in global corporates, predominantly in cultural transformation and leadership development. Since forming Generation Women, she has worked with over 3,000 women to advance their careers whilst also working with organisations to improve their diversity and create a culture of inclusion. She has this year co-founded Career Reboot with Lisa Strutt; a company dedicated to connecting talented returners and career transitioners to employers who know that diversity makes business sense.

Tammy Whelan, ARUP, was named Apprentice of the Year in 2018 and has been listed by The Daily Telegraph in its Top 50 Women in engineering as part of International Women in Engineering Day.
