Music Yard Adapts to Provide Virtual Services During Covid-19

Local business turns attention to online platforms to continue providing key business services.

Based  in Larne, The Music Yard provides a wide range of cultural education and music tuition services. In March 2020 the business had to temporarily close its facility due to the Government restrictions in relation to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  At that time, there were students who attended weekly private music lessons, dance and drama workshops and various music wellbeing workshops for people with additional needs.  The business also hosts a weekly Dementia Friendly Choir to approximately 40 members.

In response to the challenge presented by the pandemic, The Music Yard had to adapt very quickly to try and sustain as much of their service provision as possible, utilising any technology that was available to them.  The business was able to make arrangements for their music tutors to work from home, using Zoom or Facetime to teach students online. These lessons were a great success and ensured that students continued learning and progressing through such uncertain times.

The Music Yard was also able to  facilitate the continuation of the Dementia Friendly This is Me Choir sessions.  These sessions were (and still are) carried out via Zoom.  Members are all able to log in every week, to sing together and keep in touch. The business was also able to facilitate group sessions for clients  who were unable to attend music lessons in person by virtually streaming live tuition sessions to members of groups via Facebook. These sessions were great fun and members were able to interact via the comments section and by sending in photos of their participation.

As some of the Government restrictions have since eased, the business has been able to return to some level of normal service provision however many of the groups who would be deemed ‘vulnerable’ are still self-isolating and they continue to deliver these workshops virtually in the meantime.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council are proud to be working closely with The Music Yard through our various business support programmes.
